Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl was reportedly intent on getting Bayer Leverkusen center-back and Germany international Jonathan Tah for his club’s backline.
The move did not work out and Eberl revealed why.
“Bayern Munich is a club that has to make decisions. When we’re not ready to pay a certain sum, then we won’t pay it. Even if the supervisory board had approved it but if we felt that it wasn’t appropriate, then we won’t do it. I don’t care about what was written. I’ve always said that as long as there’s expenditure, there has to be income,” Eberl said during his Friday press conference. “Leverkusen gave us a deadline three weeks ago and told us: ‘Listen, you have to pay this amount by then.’ And I wrote to Simon Rolfes: ‘Simon, thank you for the deadline, thank you for the amount you told us. But we can’t agree.’ And that was the end of the negotiations. That was three and a half weeks ago. And that’s the real story behind this transfer.
“Of course, I asked again now, in case we made a sale and had some money available, if we could do it then. A lot of ‘ifs’. But no, it’s not going to happen.”
As we know now, nothing happened, but it was interesting to get Eberl’s take — and timeline — for how things played out.
Robin Gosens was linked to quite a few clubs this summer, but looked to be staying at Union Berlin per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg in a now-deleted tweet:
Fiorentina swept in out of nowhere to grab Gosens:
You cannot hammer Plettenberg for this. He simply got fed some bad information.
Bayern Munich’s season in fully underway.
The summer transfer window is almost over, the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga both kicked off, and now the Champions League draw has taken place. When you factor in that the German national team also made its call-ups, there is plenty to talk about. So, let’s get to it. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:
- INNN and Chuck break down Bayern Munich’s Champions League draw. Do we like the format? What do we think about the match-ups? PSG and FC Barcelona — again? Oh, the humanity — and subplots!
- Julian Nagelsmann made his latest call-ups to the German national team? Who won, who lost? Why so few Bayern Munich players?
- Bayern Munich is in the final few days of the summer transfer window — what will happen with Kingsley Coman and Jonathan Tah? Should Bayern Munich take a flier on Mats Hummels?
Former Bayern Munich outside-back Noussair Mazraoui made the jump to Manchester United this summer, but did not want to delve too deep into why things played out the way they did for a popular and productive — yet injury plagued — player.
“I wanted to make a move to another club this summer. When I heard the Manchester United option, I knew I wanted it. That felt good right away, but I had to wait until they had sold [Aaron Wan-Bissaka],” the full-back told Viaplay.
“You don’t just say goodbye to Bayern, but I was ready for something else. That was due to many things, but I don’t want to talk about that. I always wanted to go to the Premier League, but I knew that I would take a step after Ajax. No sooner said than done.”
It is safe to say that Angel Di Maria does not like Louis van Gaal all too much:
Bayern Munich is set to host SC Freiburg in its first home game of the Bundesliga season.
The Bavarians are coming off of a nerve-wracking 3-2 win over Wolfsburg, in a match that was probably a lot closer than it needed to be. Matchday 2 should present a less challenging obstacle in SC Freiburg, who is a club in transition.
As we know, though, what should happen and what will happen often do not align. Die Breisgau-Brasilianer stifled VfB Stuttgart last weekend, can it do the same to Bayern Munich?
We’ll see. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show:
- Where do things stand after Matchday 1?
- What to watch for with SC Freiburg.
- A look at Bayern Munich’s injury situation.
- A guess at Bayern Munich’s starting XI.
- A prediction on the match.
