So after Bayern Munich officially drew FC Barcelona in the new Champions League league stage (what a stupid name), Thomas Müller did his usual thing and went online to post a video.
You can find the whole thing on his Instagram, but the gist is that he’s psyched about the draw and especially the prospect of a reunion with Hansi Flick. Naturally, Twitter (now known as X — also a stupid name) picked up on this and shared the message far and wide, prompting reactions across the spectrum.
Here are a few of the best ones:
Müller is personally responsible for giving Barcelona a lot of grief — his record against the Catalan club is overwhelmingly positive, with eight wins and one loss (out of nine total games played), eight goals scored and two assists. He has scored more Champions League goals against FC Barcelona than any other player in the sport.
This mirrors the overall balance of power between the two FCBs. In fifteen meetings across their entire history, Barca have won just twice, with FC Bayern taking the win eleven times overall (and two draws). It is possibly the most lopsided record of any two top clubs in the competition.
So yeah, you can see why Barca fans would be a little bit rattled by the draw (and Müller’s subsequent message). Still, the overall mood among FCB#2 fans is positive — they’re off to a great start under Hansi Flick, and many remain cautiously optimistic that they can beat Bayern Munich at home this year. Time will tell whether their optimism is warranted.
