Bayern Munich got off to a winning start in the Bundesliga with a narrow 3-2 margin of victory over Wolfsburg. Now, it’s time for Vincent Kompany to make his first appearance at the Allianz Arena as coach, hosting SC Freiburg.
Team news
Josip Stanišić and Hiroki Ito are still out with injury, but otherwise, Bayern Munich have a (more or less) fully fit squad to choose from. With that in mind, we’ll assume that Vincent Kompany will pick his best lineup — no point rotating right before an international break.
That means putting Harry Kane up top, with Jamal Musiala likely behind him. Thomas Müller would be a good candidate to start this one, but that’s what we said before the last game and he ended up benched, so let’s not get our hopes up. Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are likely to play on the wings, rounding out the attack. A newly recovered Leroy Sané and the still-adjusting Michael Olise likely remain as options from the bench.
In midfield, João Palhinha may be preferred over Aleksandar Pavlović due to his ability to shield the defense. Given that Joshua Kimmich is planned as a midfielder this season, a Palhinha-Kimmich pivot may become Kompany’s go-to midfield if things go well.
The defense will likely remain unchanged from last week, provided Kim Min-jae is fully healed from the mysterious injury he was (allegedly) carrying during the Wolfsburg game. A defense anchored by Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae might strike fear into the hearts of Bayern fans worldwide, but it seems that the coaching staff and management are determined to support them through this rough patch. Joining them will likely be the ghost of Alphonso Davies at left-back, and Sacha Boey at right-back, with Manuel Neuer donning the captain’s armband in goal.
Here’s what a potential lineup could look like:
