Coming off of a historic Supercup win, the Frauen of Bayern Munich start their Frauen-Bundesliga season with an away win. Their opponents were the newly promoted, but Frauen-Bundesliga legends, Turbine Potsdam. After just one year in the second league, they are back in top flight where they belong.
After a few solid chances in the opening phase of the match, Caro Simon played an amazing ball into box from a corner kick. She found a wide open Linda Sembrant at the edge of the six-yard box. Her header went past the outstretched Potsdam keeper and over the line before the oncoming defense could clear it.
After the opening goal, Bayern had a few more chances on either side of halftime. Potsdam made a few great saves, but Bayern also failed to make the most of their chances. Sembrant completed her brace and put the match away in the 85th minute with another strong header off a corner — this time served in by Gwinn.
The collective backline were the stars of this match. Right back, Sembrant had both goals and the assists came from center-back, Simon, and left-back, Gwinn. They also shut down the Potsdam attack — allowing only three total shots, none of which made it on goal for Mala Grohs to save. Bayern have picked up right where they left off last season.
Bayern will start their DFB-Pokal der Frauen campaign next Sunday on the road to SC Sand of the second Bundesliga. Their first home league match will be on Friday, September 13 against RB Leipzig.
