Bayern Munich’s recent record in the Champions League group stages has been utterly unbelievable. Despite going through a lot of coaching upheaval Niko Kovač, Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel, Bayern have secured at least 16 points in the past 5 seasons and even played a perfect group stage campaign 3 times. Now, though, the format of the Champions League has changed to become more varied and include more top opponents.
Now it is up to new head coach Vincent Kompany to keep up the record of the previous coaches and continue the trend of excellent group stage campaigns. When asked about his thoughts on the draw, @iMiaSanMia captured Kompany’s careful yet bullish response: “I’m looking forward to the games and the variety of teams. Don’t ask me about each team separately. I just want to win every game but I don’t yet know how it’ll all feel with the new system.”
The absolute and unquenchable desire to win every game is the minimum standard that Bayern demands but it is always nice to hear it be stated aloud. Doing so will clearly take more effort than in previous campaigns, but if any club has the recent history to build off of and pull such a feat off, it would be Bayern Munich.
