Bayern Munich’s desire to move Leon Goretzka on during the summer transfer window was very public and very open and even backed up head coach Vincent Kompany, yet resulted in no movement whatsoever. Now, with the window closed, the question was whether the club and the player could resolve the situation peacefully and allow the player re-integration into the team.
Leon Goretzka coming on in the 86th minute against SC Freiburg on the weekend certainly confirmed that Kompany would not seek to bar him from the squad, but how much of a message of inclusion was such a late substitution? Asked about the chance he gave Goretzka over the weekend, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Kompany had this to say: “The transfer window is now over. What’s important for me is that we’ve already given minutes to almost the whole team after two games. Only Leroy is still out because he’s not 100% fit. That means we’re doing this together – and Leon is of course part of that.”
The focus on giving minutes to the whole team is interesting and may indeed confirm the desire to rotate throughout the season. That means Goretzka will get his chances as a part of the rotation throughout the season. How big those chances are and how plentiful they will be for the former Schalke player remain to be seen, but we have yet to witness the final moments of Leon Goretzka in a Bayern shirt.
