There was plenty of speculation on what former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the upcoming Nations League matches would be.
Amid four retirements and the exclusion of big names such as Leon Goretzka and Mats Hummels from the 2024 European Championship, it was bound to be an interesting roster. But Nagelsmann decided to stick with the roster he chose over the summer, with one notable exception: Former Bayern Munich youth and current VFB Stuttgart player Angelo Stiller.
Naturally, reporters asked Nagelsmann about this in the very next press conference, even querying if Stiller was meant to replace the impact former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos had on the team. @iMiaSanMia captured the Germany national team boss’ response: “Toni Kroos’ successor is a big job to do. I don’t want to burden him with that at the beginning. There are currently few assessments from the current season because not much has been played yet. That’s why the Euros squad is largely staying together. There may be changes in October if a few others players are in good form. Angelo did very well in Stuttgart. He was very close to the national team last year. That’s why he deserves to show what he can do.”
Nagelsmann generally likes to follow his own convictions and that has not changed. With the team that played well enough to become one of EURO 2024’s favorites, he and his team are poised to take the next step.
