Marc-André ter Stegen has been one of the world’s best goalkeepers for a decade. After rising up through the Bundesliga, Ter Stegen has been excellent for FC Barcelona since joining in 2014. Despite his success at club level, Ter Stegen has only been capped 40 times for the German national team. Why? The answer is simple. Manuel Neuer.
Now that Manuel Neuer has retired from the national team, the door has finally opened for Ter Stegen. The Barca goalkeeper has been officially named as the number one goalkeeper for Germany by Nagelsmann and Kimmich recently added his thoughts on the passing of the torch.
Kimmich on Germany’s new #1 ter Stegen: “He’s done brilliantly over the years. He always gave me the impression that he wants to be number one. That’s part of football. But if it doesn’t work out, you have a responsibility towards the team. And he has always done that… pic.twitter.com/VtFqmzRbUI

Kimmich is confident that Ter Stegen has always been a professional and has done more than enough to earn that spot. While Kimmich and Ter Stegen might not have the same connection as he did with Neuer, Kimmich certainly seems to put his stamp of approval on the decision.
It is safe to say Ter Stegen has earned it. With several awards and trophies to his name during his time in Spain and at one point even had a transfer market value of 90 million euros which is basically unheard of for a goalkeeper. Show us what you got Ter Stegen.
