In the 2-0 win over Freiburg, Thomas Müller made history when he stepped onto the pitch in the 59th minute. Müller broke Sepp Maier’s 45-year old record by registering his 710th cap for Bayern Munich. Müller rewarded the club with a goal in the 78th minute to put the match out of reach.
Müller grew up in the Bayern academy and won 12 Bundesliga Titles, six DFB-Pokal trophies, two Champions League finals, and the 2014 World Cup with Germany. This certainly puts Müller in the upper echelon of Bayern legends, but is he the greatest Bayern player of all time?
In a postgame interview with Martin Volkmar (via @iMiaSanMia), Müller said “I can only repeat what Uli Hoeneß has often said: The greatest is simply Gerd Müller, without him the club might not even exist in this form right now.”
Gerd Müller’s 570 career goals at Bayern remains unmatched, with number two (Robert Lewandowski, 344 goals) and number three (Thomas Müller, 245 goals) completely out of reach of touching that record.
