There have been whispers recently that Harry Kane may be slowing down. After a poor European Championship performance relative to his own standards (though ending up joint winner of the Golden Boot means he wasn’t too bad, right) in which he simply did not seem physically up to speed, there have been concerns about the 31-year-old Bayern Munich player’s ability to stay at the top level. After so many years and so many injuries, perhaps now Kane is slowing down?
Speaking ahead of England’s game against Finland, in which Harry Kane could earn his 100th cap (appearance) for the Three Lions if he plays, reporters asked the former Tottenham striker about this achievement and asked how many more he could caps he could win after this one. ‘At your age’ were the unspoken words at the end of this sentence. But Kane took the question in stride, with @iMiaSanMia capturing him speaking of how fit he feels he is: “I feel in really good shape, physically and mentally at a peak in my career. Watching Ronaldo score his 901st goal aged 39 inspires me to play for as long as possible. I love representing England more than anything and I don’t want it to end any time soon. It’s just about continuing to improve and be consistent. Who knows how many caps or goals I can get but I’m hungry for more.”
Later in the press conference, a reporter asked about the connection to Ronaldo Kane brought up and if Kane had any relationship with the man he played against throughout the Portuguese’s time at Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid. Kane’s response reads as follows:
“Ronaldo -and Messi- were people I looked up to growing up, they were in their prime when I was in my teenage years. Both of them were inspirations to me. To have that hunger and desire and determination and the sense to keep proving people wrong and prove to yourself you can be the best you can be. I try to use different players to motivate me. To score over 900 goals in your career is an exceptional record, to play until the age he is is really inspiring.”
To see Kane reach that age at Bayern and not decline would be the dream, wouldn’t it? Even if he were to reach that age, having scored 900 goals and equalling Ronaldo seems like a big ask. But hey, why not believe in it? It’s just one more way Kane can again defy the odds and prove us all wrong.
In case you missed it, France Football left Jamal Musiala out of their Ballon d’Or top 30, which has sparked anger among the Bayern Munich fanbase and executives alike. If you want to know why it’s such a big deal, we covered it in our newest podcast episode, alongside a discussion about Florian Wirtz vs Paul Wanner and whom Bayern Munich should get first.
