The young firecrackers are sparkling for Germany.
Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz led the way for the German attack this summer at EURO 2024 and they are picking up right where they left off after dazzling in the Nations League, each scoring in a 5-0 win over Hungary on Saturday.
Each 21-year-old is instrumental to his respective club while operating in central attacking midfield or inverting wing roles — which has made Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann’s work in combining them into the same XI all the more impressive.
Maybe that’s caught the attention of some sporting directors — in the Bundesliga or beyond. At Monday’s press conference ahead of Germany’s next international fixture, Tuesday’s match vs. the Netherlands, Nagelsmann fielded questions about whether he could see the pair teaming up at club level, too.
“I can imagine that, but it will be very expensive. Flo’s contract in Leverkusen was made by [DFB chief Rudi Völler]. Who knows, maybe Jamal will go to Leverkusen too,” Nagelsmann cracked in comments captured by Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia). “Either way, it will be expensive to bring the two together at club level.”
Well — Bayern Munich may be planning to try to do just that in the next summer transfer window.
And the best part? The factor that could be key to making these two shine together? Their team-first mentality.
“Neither of them is selfish at all in the game,” Nagelsmann continued (again via @iMiaSanMia). “Flo in particular is sometimes even too unselfish, he can score more often himself instead of passing the ball. Both are extremely hard-working, and that hasn’t diminished at all. I don’t have the feeling that either of them could lose touch with reality. They’re down-to-earth.”
In case you missed it, France Football left Jamal Musiala out of their Ballon d’Or top 30, which has sparked anger among the Bayern Munich fanbase and executives alike. If you want to know why it’s such a big deal, we covered it in our newest podcast episode, alongside a discussion about Florian Wirtz vs Paul Wanner and whom Bayern Munich should get first.
