Leon Goretzka has basically seen any chance of him being a starting player at Bayern Munich disappear upon the arrival of Vincent Kompany, and he still wouldn’t leave despite the club openly telling him that he ought to find another club. Manuel Neuer and Vincent Kompany were asked about this after the Holstein Kiel game (where Leon was left out of the matchday squad) and these were the answers they gave (both captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia)
Neuer’s answer basically tells us that every single one of his teammates believe that he will eventually get his chance:
We players feel for him too. He has always been an important factor for us. I believe in him, he’s extremely motivated, you can see that in every training session. I’m convinced that his time will come.
The coach on the other hand said that the team has enough players to travel to northern Germany.
We had 21 fit players for the Kiel game. If someone else was not in the squad, you would’ve asked about him too. We had to leave a player at home and it was Leon. Sacha Boey is now out [this was before the Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb], so we have 20 players and that question doesn’t arise. Before the game, the focus is fully on the game. We need positive energy.
To be fair to Kompany, it’s not like Goretzka was needed against Kiel who are rock bottom at time of writing. These journos also need to stop asking about Goretzka every time because Kompany is bound to give the same answer.
