Bayern Munich signed some players in the summer but came away with a bit of misfortune on the defensive side of things. Their defenders aren’t exactly performing as well as they would’ve hoped, yet coach Vincent Kompany claims that the Bavarians were able to do their jobs adequately.
“In the end you have to win the ball in any system,” Kompany began (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “The aim with defending is always the same: winning the ball and keeping clean sheets. So far we’ve often succeeded in that. Sometimes we haven’t got what we’ve deserved. We always defend as a team, whether we’re defending high or not. My players have done that very well up to now.”
The 38-year-old Belgian further explained that the way football is played is constantly changing and that he wants to keep up with that trend: “Our feeling is that the game is always evolving. Yes, we’re playing aggressively, but Bayern has done that in the past too. That’s how I understand football and that’s how I want to pass it on. At the moment, there’s a lot of rotation in positional play. If you have individually strong players, they can implement it, even if it’s very complex. If we want to press, we have to constantly develop the way we press, because other teams are constantly finding ways to overcome the press. When you play against Bayern, you rarely have the ball and have to work hard to win it back.”
