Bayern Munich sold Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United and kept Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae for themselves. While De Ligt is still getting accustomed to English football, Bayern’s center-backs are performing rather erratically, being the two lowest-rated players after the Rekordmeister thumped Zagreb 9-2 in the Champions League. But Max Eberl claims that “all teams can defend”.
“Football cannot be revolutionized in a transfer window. But football does not stand still,” Eberl began (SPORT1-Doppelpass via @iMiaSanMia). “Today, all teams can defend well, that’s the easiest thing to do. That’s why you have to impress the opponents. In the past, we had the wing pair with Robben and Ribéry. We’re always looking for this individual quality. But you also have to find other things: being active to force the opponent to play long balls. Thomas Müller is currently benefiting greatly from this idea. He initiates the pressing and is then in good positions.”
Bayern have kept only two clean sheets in their first five games in all competitions so if Max wants to talk the talk, he must follow through on that.
