Unbeaten in six, an average of just under five goals per game all while playing some of the most dominant football in recent memory, Bayern Munich are off to an emphatic start to the 2024/25 campaign.
At this point in the season, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich seems to be the real deal.
On the contrary, Bayern have had a straightforward start to the season, with their most difficult fixture coming against SC Freiburg (who they dispatched of rather straightforwardly, winning 2-0).
Bayern have yet to be truly tested thus far.
The question then becomes: “When will Kompany really prove that he is creating something special with Bayern Munich?”
Well, beating the defending Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen would be a pretty good start.
Several reporters were curious as to how Kompany would take on the upcoming gauntlet (via @iMiaSanMia).
“I don’t know. I first have to do the analysis of the opponent. My full focus was on today. From tomorrow, the focus will only be on Leverkusen. When I played against the top Bayern teams in the past, I didn’t have the impression that they were pressured by the opponent. They were always the ones to put the pressure and were good on the ball. We’ll see whether we’ll manage to do that,” said Kompany.
It is interesting to see Kompany make reference to “Bayern teams in the past”. Compared to the last few seasons, these sides would have been far more synonymous with term “mentality monsters”, with the name Bayern Munich alone being enough to strike fear into the hearts of their opponents.
Kompany’s response shows exactly what he is setting out to do with this Bayern side. He isn’t focused on just improving the team, but rebuilding the dynasty that was Bayern Munich.
As the old saying goes: “Actions speak louder than words.”
The actions of Vincent Kompany’s high-flying Bayern side will speak a thousand words when they take on Xabi Alonso’s formidable Bayer Leverkusen.
Is Vincent Kompany the real deal? We’ll find out next weekend.
