Gugliemo Vicario had a night to remember between the sticks yesterday as Tottenham kicked off their UEFA Europa League (UEL) campaign in dramatic fashion.
The Lilywhites were handed a red card inside eight minutes and yet managed to take all three points from the encounter while also keeping a clean sheet.
After the game, the Spurs captain had a message for the fanbase.
Gugliemo Vicario elated after captaining Tottenham to Qarabağ win
Gugliemo Vicario took to Instagram to celebrate his first outing as Tottenham captain on Thursday.
The game saw Tottenham win their Europa League opener 3-0 despite going down to ten men inside ten minutes. Vicario was Spurs’ man of the match in a performance that included a 58th-minute penalty miss from the Azerbaijani side.
After the game, Vicario posted this on Instagram with the following caption:
“A day that I will not forget. The first one as captain, leading this great club at home, in a European cup and, more importantly, getting the 3 points. Proud.
“This one is for those fans that are always by our side no matter what.”
Vicario, as quoted by Football Italia.
Now in his second season at Spurs, the £75k-per-week keeper continues impressing with his performances and remains Ange Postecoglou’s first choice despite having his detractors. He now has two clean sheets from his opening six games of the season.
Up next for Tottenham in the Premier League is a game against Man United away at Old Trafford.
More to be done
Now with the Spurs armband, Vicario once again demonstrated last night why he is truly Hugo Lloris’ successor in more ways than one. Stylistically, there is even an argument to be made whether Italy are better off having him between the sticks instead of Gigi Donnarumma.
For the time being, though, Vicario does need to be a bit more consistent for his club side to distance himself from Lloris’ shortcomings, especially if Spurs are to continue playing the ride-or-die football under Postecoglou.
