Tottenham Hotspur are suffering a bit of an injury crisis off late as Ange Postecoglou is watching his players fall down like flies in the dressing room at Hotspur Way, and the latest blow can aid veteran Ben Davies return to the starting lineup for the Lilywhites fixture against Brighton on Sunday.
Udogie faces late fitness test for Brighton clash
Spurs first-choice left back Destiny Udogie is scheduled to face a late fitness test to determine if he will be fit enough to play against the Seagulls. The Italian international’s injury is not depicted to be a serious one, and while he may well be in the starting lineup tomorrow, the Greek tactician would not want to risk getting the former Udinese full back out for an extended spell.
Former Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence emerges as an obvious option that could replace Udogie to maintain the pace and power down the left flank. Despite it being his secondary side, Spence has put in some impressive performances from the left-back role off late. Alternatively, the Australian head coach can also choose to start Micky van de Ven in the left fullback role.
King backs Davies to start against Brighton
However, ex-Lilywhites scout Bryan King has expressed confidence in Ben Davies to start against Brighton. He thinks that the wealth of experience that Davies brings will push him to be a starting candidate for the game against Fabian Hürzeler’s side.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:
“Udogie missing out would be a problem. Leaving him behind in London so that he could focus on his recovery was definitely the sensible choice.
“This is a starting player we are talking about, important to the team. However, he has players that he can bring in for him.
“They have Spence, we’ve seen van de Ven play left-back. However, personally, I think he would start with Davies, you can’t beat experience. I think he is your best choice if Udogie doesn’t play.”
Ben Davies has been demoted to more of a rotation option in the 2024/25 season, having made three starts in the League Cup and Europa League. However, the luxury of an international break can help Spurs as they can start Ben Davies amid the busy schedule of managing European and domestic competitions.
It is easy to forget that Ben Davies is an important presence in the dressing room at Hotspur Way, and his leadership, complemented by his experience, can come crucial first Spurs tomorrow.
