Man United were seemingly keen on manager Sebastian Hoeness over the summer, before offering a new contract to Erik ten Hag.
Although Erik ten Hag was offered a new Manchester United contract by INEOS over the summer, it seems as though Sir Jim Ratcliffe did look elsewhere first. It did feel like the English businessman stalled on the decision on whether Ten Hag would remain in the dugout at the time.
Now, Sport Bild believe they know the identity of one manager the Red Devils were looking at; Sebastian Hoeness.
According to their information, United were ‘keen’ on appointing the 42-year-old as manager over the summer, with the club having ‘inquired’ about his availability back in July.
Hoeness, the current VfB Stuttgart manager, was ‘flattered’ by the Reds’ interest in his services, though no concrete talks eventually took place. Instead, it was just initial negotiations and discussions. The German believes his time with his current employers is ‘far from over’.
The prospective Reds boss only joined Stuttgart eighteen months ago and quite clearly, he’s doing his utmost to help his club move up the table after flirting with relegation just before he took charge.
Hoeness plays an attractive style of football that would fall in line with the way United fans would like their team to play, while it does feel like a shrewd potential move for a manager who is lesser known than some of the big names around the continent.
You get the impression that Hoeness wouldn’t abandon Stuttgart mid-season, hence, this would likely be a move United would have to wait until next summer to sort out. It could lead to some sort of interim manager scenario, assuming Ten Hag doesn’t see out the campaign. Let’s not forget Ruud van Nistelrooy is currently a coach at Old Trafford…
