It has been confirmed that Man United do hold the option to buy Alvaro Fernandez back from Benfica, with a clause in his contract.
Over the summer, Manchester United made a bold decision to sell Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica.
The Spanish left-back had shown great promise and potential, without ever really breaking into the first-team. However, I would have liked to see him kept around, particularly due to the injury problems that both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have suffered…
Fernandez has gone on to enjoy life at Benfica during the early days of his career over in Portugal, which makes United’s decision look even stranger. However, there’s still a chance the left-back could make an Old Trafford return.
The Manchester Evening News have now confirmed that United do hold a buyback clause in Fernandez’s contract, meaning they still have an option to re-sign the talented 21-year-old defender.
The Old Trafford club have until 2026 to activate that clause, at which point the clause will expire.
It’s stated United are ‘aware of the progress’ made by Fernandez during his time with Benfica, though they now have twenty months to make a firm decision on his future.
I firmly believe a new left-back signing will be the next major addition made to this squad. The lack of consistency in that area of the field is becoming a genuine problem for the Old Trafford club and while I think they will look away from Fernandez at first, I wouldn’t completely rule out a move to sign the former Real Madrid man.
He’s a top player who is only improving with regular first-team football under his belt, though credit to United for negotiating a buyback option of some sort.
