According to a report by Florian Plettenberg, England will not have to pay Bayern Munich a fee to hire Thomas Tuchel, even though the German is under contract with the club until 2025. Apparently, the club already assured him back in February that no fees would be demanded if Tuchel found a new employer in the duration of his remaining contract.
Tuchel, who made €9 million a year plus bonuses at Bayern Munich will probably appreciate the gesture since it makes his move to the Three Lions all the simpler. The English FA, meanwhile, will probably appreciate the discount they’re getting on a coach of this caliber. If Tuchel were still under contract at Chelsea (for example) or if he had gone to Manchester United, it’s unlikely they’d be getting a deal like this.
It wouldn’t be the first time Bayern Munich have waived a fee for one of its former coaches to go manage a national team side. The DFB never did pay a fee when they hired Hansi Flick, and then when Julian Nagelsmann was hired to replace him, Bayern Munich agreed to pay the difference in his salary so that he could make the switch. After effectively subsidizing the DFB for a few years now, it’s good to see the club branch out in new directions.
As an aside, doesn’t anyone find it fascinating how the last three Bayern coaches all decided to go into international football? There’s a pattern there. Maybe we’ll see Vincent Kompany coaching Belgium before long …
