Archie Gray was arguably the marquee signing of the young set of players Tottenham managed to pry away from stronger-on-paper clubs.
And he has so far repaid them in kind with his performances, having looked very promising in the first months of the season.
And, according to John Wenham, Gray is only going to soar higher.
John Wenham backs Archie Gray to replace Ben Davies at Spurs
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur News, John Wenham, owner of the Lilywhite Rose podcast, said that Archie Gray could take over from Ben Davies the role of Tottenham’s go-to utility man going forward.
“Gray is doing really well.
“I think, at a minimum, he is going to become the next Davies in the squad, in terms of his reliability in multiple positions.“
“Davies is out of contract this summer and I can see Gray taking his role in the squad. Him being so young and counting as homegrown too, that is really exciting.”
Arriving from Leeds United for £30 million, the 18-year-old has been nothing but impressive in his first months in North London.
Gray has proved more than comfortable playing as a right-back and a central midfielder in the six appearances he has made thus far.
The £75k-per-week man will be in line to feature against West Ham later this week as club football resumes.
Same-same but different
Sure, both Ben Davies and Archie Gray operate in different positions at the back, but the fundamental point about their versatility still stands true.
Davies is likely to be moved on in the summer, and it won’t be the worst decision on the club’s part. It also wouldn’t be unwise to say Gray has more potential to become a better, more multi-faceted operator than Davies given he is still a teenager and already almost as versatile as the veteran Welshman.
That said, Gray’s ceiling also means he will most likely not remain at Spurs for as long as Davies has.
