Tottenham sold Emerson Royal in the summer deeming him surplus to requirements.
However, recent developments at Real Madrid may take another right-back off the Lilywhites’ hands, one they actually want to keep.
And while it looks like they might be losing Pedro Porro, Spurs have made sure to tie down one they already have on board to a new deal.
Djed Spence extends Tottenham contract until 2028
Tottenham have announced extending the contract of their English fullback Djed Spence.
The 24-year-old’s £20m move from Middlesbrough two years ago hasn’t quite yet worked out. Sporadic appearances amidst managerial upheaval and several loan spells are all what the England U21 international has been offered, the latest having come at Genoa in the second half of last season.
Spence has been in Ange Postecoglou’s setup this season, having made four appearances so far in which he has scored a goal.
Spence’s previous Spurs contract was worth £25,000 per week, running until June 2027.
Asset protection
The Pedro Porro situation has left Tottenham looking for options in the market well before January; they need to be ready for any and all possibilities.
So it makes sense for them to tie Spence down for another year. Additionally, we don’t know how much longer Ange Postecoglou will have in the job, so Spence’s time on the fringes of the first team may also come to an end in the coming months.
Even with Spence locked down for longer, expect Spurs to go into the market looking for another right-back.
