Speaking to German publication kicker, former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reveals that he and Uli Hoeneß had nothing to do with the search for a new coach following the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel last season. Current FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was often rumored to be a replacement, but the club ended up hiring Vincent Kompany from Burnley instead.
KHR says that the coaching search was entirely orchestrated by Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, with he and Uli deliberately taking a step back:
• Was Flick discussed as a possible successor to Thomas Tuchel?
Rummenigge: “Uli Hoeneß and I never actively interfered in the search for a coach. Max is on the board and Christoph Freund is the sporting director – we did not want to take on a dominant or even operational role”

With Bayern Munich set to face FC Barcelona next week in the Champions League, the comparisons between Hansi Flick and Vincent Kompany are set to reach a fever pitch very soon. If Bayern fail to put up a good showing when they visit Spain, you can be sure that Eberl and Freund will become a lightning rod for criticism.
