As Bayern Munich prepares to meet an old friend this week in FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, the man who replaced him is celebrating the duplication of one of his most legendary feats.
Harry Kane’s second-half hat-trick at the weekend didn’t just secure Bayern a win over VfB Stuttgart — it earned Kane a lupenreiner hat-trick, or ‘perfect’ hat-trick in German. In the English conception, a ‘perfect’ hat-trick involves the trifecta of a left foot, right foot, and header, but in German, it means something else.
Via @iMiaSanMia:
Harry Kane scored a ‘German hat-trick’ (known as lupenreiner Hat-trick or perfect hat-trick) for the first time for Bayern yesterday (three goals scored in the same half and uninterrupted by other goalscorer(s)). The last player to achieve that for Bayern was Robert Lewandowski against Wolfsburg in 2015.
Of course, Lewandowski’s day against Wolfsburg is known a bit more for something else…but while Kane didn’t hit five goals (this time), he did likewise lift Bayern out of doldrums in a game that looked headed towards potentially a different result.
A fitting, and very German day from the England captain, right as the Champions League brings Bayern and Lewandowski back together again. ◆
