When Bayern Munich takes the field this Wednesday against FC Barcelona, it will be legendary striker facing off against another…with the added significance that Barça’s man, Robert Lewandowski, was the Bavarian torch-bearer for eight glory-filled years.
Now it is Harry Kane wearing the No. 9 for Bayern, and who better to fill those shoes? Kane previewed the titanic clash but seems to be taking its significance in stride.
“Robert is a fantastic striker, one of the best of my generation. It will be a special game,” Kane remarked in comments captured by Sky Sport DE journalist Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia). “Many of us know their coach [former Bayern coach Hansi Flick] very well. We expect a similar opponent to today [Stuttgart], who wants the ball and presses high. It will be a tough fight, but we will take it on.”
It was a comment surely meant as praise for their strong Bundesliga foes, but Bayern did just thrash VfB Stuttgart 4-0 on Saturday — courtesy of a perfect German hat-trick from Kane.
But then again, that is not an unusual Bayern-Barça scoreline, is it?
Can the Bavarians do it again? ◆
