Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where Bayern Munich’s U-23, U-19 and U-17 games are recapped. Match highlights are hyperlinked on top of the match results and lineups are shown. If you wish to watch the U-23 game live in the future or rewatch it in full length, you must need an FC Bayern TV subscription. This is usually also the case for the U-19 matches. Important: This week’s U-19 game was live streamed by Sky Sports DE and can be accessed free of charge through this link if you live in Germany or have a VPN (the latter of which may have been this author’s method of watching). If you wish to see the other youth teams’ performances this past weekend, here is the link. Without further ado, here is the FC Bayern Campus Round Up:
Bayern lineup (with subs): Schmitt – Brückner, Scholl, Breitkreuz, Dell’Erba – Ibrahimović, Rüger (80. Unsöld), Denk (72. Aseko) – Demircan (65. Della Rovere), Irankunda (90.+4 Dettoni), Wagner (65. Kern).
Bayern goals: 1:1 Denk (35.), 2:1 Ibrahimović (45.+1), 3:2 Breitkreuz (60.)
Opposition goals: 0:1 Mannhardt (31.), 2:2 Mannhardt (56.)
This was an inspired comeback performance by a team that has so often struggled with setbacks this season. Not that all was good, however. As has often been the case this season, the team dominated possession but struggled to do much of anything with it. There was no moving the ball between the lines, no fluid movement off the ball and the vast majority of Bayern II’s possession was spent with the backline passing it back and forth. It was rather inevitable that this bluntness in the attack would lead to an opposition counter attack and goal, which was precisely what happened when Mannhardt scored in the 31st minute.
But the team showed the right reaction. The attack did not magically improve. In fact, if one watches the highlights, the goals came from a direct free kick, a counter attack from an opposition corner and a corner of the team’s own. But the team never let their heads drop and demonstrated the force of will to win the match. Youth development comes down to many different factors, but one of the most important aspects to develop is the grit and never ending desire to win, which was demonstrated today.
Individually, Luca Denk impressed with his third long range goal in 3 games with a gorgeously curved free kick into the top corner, Nestory Irankunda worked hard all night and was rewarded with an assist for Arijon Ibrahimović and the substitutes in Guido Della Rovere, Timo Kern and Noel Aseko Nkili helped take the team performance to the next level.
All of a sudden, the fight for top spot seems possible again. Having played 12 games, Bayern II are on 24 points, 7 behind 1st place. Due to multiple Bayern games being cancelled due to the international breaks and the internationals the team lost, however, the team has played less games than every team ahead of them. If they were to win all these games, they would in 2nd place, 1 points behind top of the table 1. FC Schweinfurt.
Bayern lineup (with subs): Klanac – Dalpiaz, Mijatović (66. Schäfer), Puljić, Ofli (78. Hoffmann) – Nasrawe, Santos (29. Wilson) – Richter (66. Paylan), Chávez, Scott (66. Binder) – Eckl (46. Zöls).
Bayern goals: 1:1 Chávez (39.), 2:1 Dalpiaz (61.). 3:1 Chávez (62.), 4:1 Binder (76.),
Opposition goals: 0:1 Spann (32.), 4:2 Pfeiffer (88.).
First and foremost, a reminder that it is possible to watch this game free of charge via this link. Second of all, this was a competent victory over what previously Bayern’s closest challengers, SpVgg Unterhaching, despite conceding the first goal like Bayern II did. The U-19s, however, dominated in nearly every facet of the first half only to concede from mistakes in the build up play from Jussef Nasrawe and Leon Klanac, making the opposition’s lead even more aggravating.
But, in what is rapidly becoming a theme this week, Bayern held their nerve and continued to play well, eventually getting rewarded with an equalizer before the break. The goal to go ahead in the 61st minute came from right back Magnus Dalpiaz, who warrants a little section of his own.
It is imperative to remember that Magnus Dalpiaz is a right back. Yet he has scored 7 goals in 9 leagues games. This level of output is not just unbelievable, it should not be conceivable for a right back. These goals come from either his amazing shot power, intelligent offensive positioning or the complete physical package he offers at the tender age of 17. His goal against Unterhaching combined the latter two attributes, as his inverted positioning allowed him to pick up the ball after a deflection and power through multiple opponents before finding the bottom corner. From then on, the game was fairly comfortable.
This result leaves Bayern’s U-19s 12 points clear at the top with 27 points after 9 games and the only perfect record left in all 8 separate tables of the U-19 Bundesliga. 5 games are left before the league completely reorganizes. The U-19s will now travel to Barcelona to face against the other FCB in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday, October 23rd at 10:00AM EST. The game should be available to watch via the official UEFA Youth League website.
Kösters – Wijks (77. Moumouni), Lambe, Kiala (77.Anand), Ajayi – Karl (62. Matosevic), Schmid, Göttlicher (70. Hentcho Nseke) – Egwuatu, Gashi (70. Snip), Mike (62. Afanou).
Bayern goals: 1:1 Wijks (11.), 2:1 Karl (14.), 3:1 Lambe (22.), 4:1 Gashi (54.), 5:1 Mike (56.), 6:1 Snip (90.+1), 7:1 Egwuatu (90.+3)
Opposition goal: 1:0 Burkhardt (8.)
Comebacks were the name of the game this week, as yet again the opposition scored the first goal. But the U-17s were the ones who demonstrated the biggest reaction, scoring 7 goals without any further replies from the hosts. In a demonstration of the variety of the talent that is in the squad, those 7 goals were scored by 7 different goalscorers.
