Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has dropped a key bit of info on one of his star players availability ahead of Toon playing Chelsea this Wednesday.
The two face off again, this time in the Carabao Cup, after Chelsea beat them 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Sources: The ‘leaders’ impressing Enzo Maresca’s staff at Cobham, plus the inside details on Josh Acheampong’s contract situation!
Howe will be looking for a better end result this time around, and perhaps some revenge for the defeat at the weekend as well. There’s a lot at stake in this one, with both clubs really wanting to win some silverware this season and this competition providing a realistic opportunity to do so for both of them.
Enzo Maresca is likely to field a ‘second string’ starting Xl on Wednesday night, as he seems to be doing for all cup games this season. But that does not mean it will be any less strong.
Howe is hoping for a Gordon chance
Toon winger Anthony Gordon missed the last game with injury, but Howe confirms there is a chance he might be able to play tomorrow.
In words picked up by SPTC, Howe said:
“We will pick a team to win the game. Chelsea are a difficult opponent, I am sure they will make changes, but with those changes they will still be a very strong team. We are desperate to progress.
“There is a chance Anthony Gordon could make Wednesday but we have to make the right decision.”
This would be a huge boost for Howe and Newcastle, but it sounds like it could just end up being far too much of a risk to bring him in.
Maresca will be aware of the threat that Gordon can bring, and I am sure that he was pleased not to see him playing in the game on Sunday.
