Enzo Maresca has shared what he felt Chelsea didn’t do well in their win against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues head to St James’ Park to take on the Magpies in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening looking to make it two wins in a matter of days against Eddie Howe’s side.
It was a close contest, with the Blues running out 2-1 winners and it’s likely to be the same again, with Chelsea facing a tough task at a ground they have lost at for the past two seasons in the league.
Maresca on what Chelsea didn’t do well against Newcastle
The Blues have made an impressive start to life under Maresca and currently sit fifth, just a point behind Arsenal in third place.
Maresca has made a bigger impact than many would have predicted, although it’s early days and there’s still a lot of improvement Chelsea can make as a side.
Chelsea have looked great going forward with the number of quality attackers they have, and Micah Richards described the partnership between Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer as brilliant.
It’s at the other end of the pitch Chelsea have had issues and they have looked vulnerable at the back, with former Blue Pat Nevin stating the club won’t challenge for the title until they have top quality at centre back.
Speaking in the build up to the Carabao Cup tie Maresca stressed how there’s still plenty of room for improvement and highlighted what he didn’t like about his side against Newcastle.
“I still think the same,” he told his pre-match press-conference.
“We can improve many, many things. We can do many things better- defend better, attack better, manage the game better in the last 20 minutes.
“We didn’t manage the game in the right way against Newcastle. This is a learning process.”
Given how well Chelsea are playing it’s exciting to hear there’s still plenty of room for improvement and fans will be hoping Maresca can guide them back to the Champions League and put a trophy or two in the cabinet come the end of the season.
