Werner not expected to leave Tottenham in January
Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner has been far from his best self in north London, especially this season. A number of lacklustre performances from him in the final third have frustrated fans and at times, been detrimental to the team’s result as well, prompting talk that he could be forced back to Leipzig by the termination of his loan in January itself.
Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed on his YouTube channel that this is not possible as no such option exists in the agreement between Tottenham and RB Leipzig. It is only the Bundesliga giants who hold the cards to his future and can recall him early, although that does not seem to be an option they are looking to exercise in the winter, at least at this point in time.
It remains to be seen if indeed Tottenham were planning on terminating Werner’s loan at Hotspur Way prematurely or if it was just talk caused by the reaction of fans. In either case, it is good news for the team that he will be staying on until the summer as his departure would have severely shortened the offensive squad depth.
Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are both struggling with injuries. The latter underwent a surgery recently and there is no timeframe provided for his return just yet, so Werner will be an important option off the bench. He is more experience that the likes of Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear, and will be worth utilising in the busy footballing calendar over the winter, especially in the cup.

There does not seem to be any doubt regarding his future after the season, however, as Tottenham are unlikely to exercise their option of buying him. Instead, they have extended Son Heung-min’s contract through till June 2026 and could invest on bringing in a fresh face next summer, more so if Richarlison also follows Werner to the exit door.
