With injuries to midfielders João Palhinha and Aleksandar Pavlović, some might think that Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is sweating who might start next Joshua Kimmich against FC Augsburg.
Kimmich — by the way — picked up a knock while playing for the German national team, but has insisted that he is fine.
Regardless, Kompany is very much at ease with the situation.
“Leon is a total professional and that’s why it’s a very clear, very simple decision for me to say: OK, we’ll just carry on [with Goretzka], because we trusted the player 100%. Konrad Laimer can also play in this position — that’s true,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “But we have a lot of injuries in defense at the moment, and he has done an outstanding job in that role. I have to be honest, I have no complaints in this area.
“We have two injured players, but we’re not having headaches because the quality is less – that’s not the case. It’s just a different player profile. And I haven’t had a single player who didn’t give 100% in training – otherwise they wouldn’t play, no chance. Leon did that even in the difficult times when he was of course sometimes unhappy, which is totally normal.”
So…for all of those folks who are largely against Goretzka, you might have to grin-and-bear it.
