The right-back spot has been heavily rotated over the course of Vincent Kompany’s tenure at Bayern Munich, however, the Belgian coach seems to have his preferred option locked in (at least while Sacha Boey and Josip Stanišić remain on the sidelines).
As the old saying goes: “One man’s misfortune is another man’s gain.” In the case of Boey and Stanišić’s injury woes, Konrad Laimer is set to gain by securing a starting spot at right-back.
Interestingly, the Austrian isn’t the only player set to benefit. Laimer’s switch from midfield to defence as well as Aleksandar Pavlović’s injury, means open real estate in the middle of the park. Cue a player on the outskirts eager to make a return to regular first team minutes, Leon Goretzka.
Philipp Kessler believes both players are, at least, set to start in Bayern’s Bundesliga clash against FC Augsburg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Although he theoretically can fill in for Palhinha and Pavlović in midfield, Konrad Laimer is currently seen internally as the best available option at right-back [as long as Boey and Stanišić are not ready]. That’s why the Austrian is set to continue playing at right-back, while Leon Goretzka is on the verge of his second start in a row in midfield against Augsburg tomorrow.
It’s unfortunate that neither Boey or Stanišić, players with good potential, have not been able to stamp their mark on the season due to injury. However, Laimer and Goretzka will certainly be thankful for the chance at regular minutes and even more determined to make good on their opportunity.
