Tottenham are planning to dip their toes in the January transfer window for a new goalkeeper
Tottenham Hotspur have endured a hugely inconsistent season and currently lie 10th in the Premier League table.
That has invited some pressure on Ange Postecoglou, with some sections of the fanbase and media even calling for him to be fired by the board. It appears though Daniel Levy will not wield the axe so quickly and give Ange Postecoglou time to turn the fortunes around of the club.
The Greek-Australian tactician is set to get the January transfer window to address some holes in his squad. Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold has revealed that Ange Postecoglou would love to sign a creative midfielder during the January transfer window if the opportunity arises.
Now, John Wenham—the owner of the famous Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—expects the north London outfit to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with current No.1 Guglielmo Vicario. He doesn’t think none of the current in-house options are up to the required standard to act as a deputy for Vicario and speculates Fraser Forster to leave at the end of the season.
“I think Tottenham need a new goalkeeper to be an understudy for Vicario,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I’m not sure either Josh Keeley or Luca Gunter are quite ready to become the club’s number two. Therefore, there is space for someone to be signed there.
“Forster will likely be moving on in the summer, as well as Alfie Whiteman. As a result, if an opportunity presented itself, I’d expect Tottenham to sign a goalkeeper to challenge Vicario.”
Spurs are keeping tabs on Lille’s highly-rated goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. The 23-year-old is regarded as ‘the most promising goalkeeper in world football’ and was recently called up to the France senior squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Chevalier has made 98 appearances for Lille, conceding just 93 goals while keeping 38 clean sheets—strong numbers that has caught the attention of several European clubs. He is clearly a very talented goalkeeper with high potential and would be an upgrade on Forster, who is past his prime and expected to be released at the end of the season.
With neither Keeley nor Gunter having top-level experience at the moment, Spurs must make a move for a new goalkeeper in January. Chevalier has the qualities to compete and push Vicario to the limits, with the current Tottenham No.1 having vulnerabilities from set-pieces.

Vicario hasn’t entirely been convincing in goal since arriving at N17 in 2023 and if he doesn’t show improvement, Big Ange should convince the board to sign Chevalier from Lille.
