Besiktas have reportedly revived their interest in Arsenal midfielder Jorginho as the player approaches the final six months of his contract.
While The Mirror suggests the Turkish side are preparing for a free move, the situation is more nuanced. Arsenal hold an option to extend the 32-year-old’s deal by an additional 12 months, leaving his future firmly in the club’s hands.
Besiktas initially made contact with Jorginho’s camp back in January, and they remain keen on the Italian midfielder. Their interest is partly driven by uncertainty over the future of Moatasem Al-Musrati, their current defensive midfielder, who is attracting interest from clubs in the Middle East. However, any potential move hinges on Arsenal’s willingness to release Jorginho, who remains a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Arsenal are unlikely to sanction Jorginho’s departure during the January transfer window unless a significant offer is tabled, which is even more unlikely. Despite limited minutes, the midfielder’s experience and composure have made him an influential figure both on and off the pitch since his £10m arrival from Chelsea in January 2023.
This season, Jorginho has made eight appearances for Arsenal, including three starts, and he remains a reliable option when called upon. His role as a steadying influence in midfield has endeared him to fans, even as he operates in a largely rotational capacity. His most recent outing against Nottingham Forest marked his 60th appearance in an Arsenal shirt.
The midfielder signed a one-year extension last May, and while Arsenal’s decision to trigger the additional year is not yet clear, their hesitation could signal openness to a summer departure.
For his part, Jorginho is likely to weigh his options carefully. Having previously spoken about the possibility of returning to Serie A, where he enjoyed spells with Napoli and Hellas Verona, he may opt for a move back to Italy if Arsenal decide against retaining him.
