Southampton played host to Liverpool in the Premier League this afternoon, and the St Mary’s faithful took inspiration from the West Ham United fans with a song aimed at Darwin Nunez.
Liverpool took the lead through a Dominik Szoboszlai goal after 30 minutes, before Southampton fought back to equalise just before half-time and they then took the lead after 56 minutes.
Mohamed Salah then fired back for Liverpool to make it 2-2 midway through the second-half, before scoring the Reds’ winner from the spot late on.
It was a frantic final 10 minutes or so, and Liverpool took the spoils in the end.
Any West Ham fans watching the Premier League clash would have been doing so with a wry smile on their faces after something the Saints fans sang towards Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan seems to be the butt of the joke every single week that he plays.
And today was no different…
What Southampton fans sang to Liverpool’s Nunez was brilliant
It was a lively encounter at St Mary’s this afternoon.
A classic Premier League football match in full flow was served up on the south coast.
However, one Liverpool player who was nowhere near up to scratch was Darwin Nunez.
The 25-year-old was well off the pace, and then he started play-acting in a big way.
And the Saints fans responded in sensational fashion!
The Southampton fans serenaded Nunez with chants of, for want of a better phrase, ‘You’re not a very good Andy Carroll’, after he went down far too easily inside the Saints’ box looking for a penalty.
It’s a brilliantly hilarious chant, but the Southampton fans didn’t come up with it. That honour goes to the West Ham fans, who sang it towards the Uruguayan forward back in December 2023 up at Anfield.
You absolutely love to see it don’t you.
Darwin Nunez would do well to emulate Andy Carroll
Andy Carroll joined West Ham on loan in the 2012/13 campaign, before we made his move a permanent one for around £15 million the following summer (BBC). He then left to join Newcastle United on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.
He was a hugely popular figure at the London Stadium, and was just as well-known for his long ponytail and antics off the pitch as he was for his goals and performances on the field of play.
Unfortunately for the Hammers, Carroll never fulfilled his true potential at Upton Park and the London Stadium.
Maybe the same will be said of Darwin Nunez in years to come.
One thing’s for sure – the Uruguayan cannot compete with Carroll when it comes to incredible goals.
The former Hammer had a propensity for wonder-goals – there were none better than Carroll’s scissor kick at the London Stadium against Crystal Palace for West Ham and his 40-yard strike for Amiens in 2023.
The 6ft 4in target man didn’t go down easily like Nunez does either.
The Southampton fans let the Liverpool striker know that he might not be as good as he thinks he is on Sunday afternoon, just like the West Ham supporters did up at Anfield 11 months ago.
I’m now picturing Darwin Nunez at home tonight furiously googling Andy Carroll after the chants today!
