Liverpool winger Mo Salah says he believes Manchester City will “strike back” and be a force to be reckoned with once again this season.
Salah’s team are now eight points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side heading into next weekend’s top-of-the-table clash at Anfield. Salah says that, while he is keen to stretch the gap out even further, he is under no illusions about the calibre of their opponents:
“We have a game against [City next] so hopefully we win it and go ahead [of them] more, 11 points. Man City is Man City – they had a bad time now but they are going to strike back. They have a great coach, great players. Hopefully, we can beat them and go further [ahead].”
The match on Sunday could prove pivotal in the title race despite the match being so early in the season.
Guardiola has already declared that City can’t afford to lose against Liverpool
In an interview after the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend, Guardiola was asked whether a defeat at Anfield would end the Cityzens’ title challenge.
The Catalan acknowledged that it was “true” that losing the match could be fatal for their chances of finishing top of the league this campaign.
Who are the favourites to win the title at the bookmakers?
City’s loss to Spurs has now dropped them behind Arsenal in terms of the odds for winning the league. Most bookies have priced them at 7/2. The Gunners meanwhile are between 3/1 and 10/3 to lift the title.
After securing a 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool are odds-on favourites to finish in 1st place, with some betting firms placing their odds as short as 4/5.
Guardiola’s men have it all to do to get back into contention, and a win at Anfield could be key to turning around their fortunes.
