Chelsea are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign 15-year-old Mathis Eboué, son of former Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboué, from Watford.
Mathis, already regarded as a rising star, has played in higher age categories for Watford, including their Under-21s, and has delivered standout performances at the international level.
Last month, he scored the winning goal for England’s Under-16s in a 1-0 victory against France to claim the U16 Challenge Trophy in Spain.
The teenager’s impending transfer to Chelsea will follow the Premier League’s five-step process for moves involving compensation. This procedure ensures compliance with Youth Development Rules, including interviews with the player’s family and both clubs by an independent third party.
The move has added significance due to Mathis’ familial ties to Emmanuel Eboué, who remains a fan favourite among Arsenal supporters. Known for his charismatic personality and versatility, the Ivory Coast international played for Arsenal from 2005 to 2011, making 132 appearances.
While his time in North London didn’t yield silverware, he was part of the squad that reached the 2006 Champions League final.
Should the deal go through, Mathis Eboué will join Chelsea’s Cobham academy, known for its development of young players. However, the move may sting Arsenal fans, given Eboué senior’s ties to their club and the missed opportunity to see another member of the Eboué family don Arsenal colours.
The transfer remains subject to final approvals, with the process typically taking three weeks to complete.
