Uli Hoeneß is not stranger to controversial statements. In fact, the supervisory board member for Bayern Munich has created an incredible reputation for saying the most headline worthy quotes dozens of times a season. It has happened again, as Uli Hoeness, speaking to a finance forum of all things, declared this: “What I can promise is the league title. We are in a wonderful position at the moment. We are top of the table,” Hoeneß explained, via @iMiaSanMia. “And our only real competitors, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, are far behind us.”
Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt may not be happy to hear that. That lack of joy, however, is not unique to them. In fact, Hoeness claims that fans find winning the title boring: “Back when I was still playing, we were the happiest people when we won the title,” Hoeneß reminisced. “But today, when you say before the season that we want to become German champions, they say, ‘wow, that’s boring’.”
Of course, winning the title 11 times in a row may have that kind of effect on people, especially casual fans. Nobody aside from Bayern’s fans want to see the club win the title every single season. Now, however, Bayern have been given a clean slate due to Bayer Leverkusen’s win last season, leading to the kind of motivation and excitement that has led the Bavarians to the top of the table.
