Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Man City last week was remarkable not only because they managed to pull the City defence apart for four goals but also because they managed to keep a clean sheet—their first in nearly a month.
The Lilywhites are definitely having problems at the back, and their Etihad heroics don’t change the fact that they’re very likely to ship in goals again in the coming games.
They may look to change that in a month’s time.
John Wenham backs Tottenham to target centre-backs in January
John Wenham, owner of the Tottenham podcast Lilywhite Rose, believes the club will look to get in a centre-back or two in the January transfer window.
“We saw that Spurs had some interest in signing a centre-back during the summer.
“Davies has only got seven months left to run on his Spurs contract which means the club do need to start planning ahead.
“Therefore, I think they will definitely be in the market for a new centre-back in January, especially with these constant injury issues for Romero and van de Ven.”
Both of Spurs’ first-choice centre-backs, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are out injured. While the Dutchman has returned to training, the Argentina international is expected to be missing until next week at the very least. The two are also rated very highly owing to their performances at the club and have been linked with moves away.
In the absence of the first-choice centre-halves, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has had to rely on makeshift options in Ben Davies, Radu Drăgușin, and even the young Archie Gray.
Spurs’ 4-0 victory over Man City last weekend was the first time they managed to keep a clean sheet since the end of October, when they beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in the Europa League.
This makes sense
It makes sense for Spurs to consider options at centre-back in January. Their first-choice operators in the slots are heavily linked with moves away when they’re not injured, and in their absence, they have only one out-and-out centre-back who until the Man City game was leaving a lot to be desired and is himself exit-linked.
And while Luka Vušković is arriving next summer, he’s 17; putting all their hopes on him would be a bit too much.
