Dear West Ham United squad,
I hope you’re well. It’s going to be a tough week for you. To ensure we’re all on the same page, I’ve written this letter to you all.
What we expect from you:
- Turn up to training and leave your ego at the door. You’re at work, among peers, and nobody at work likes someone who thinks they’re better than everyone else. It leads to disharmony and eventually to the realisation that you were the cause. Get your head down and support each other.
- If something’s not right, speak up constructively. Express your thoughts to management calmly and constructively. Don’t just moan to your peers and stay silent with the manager. Go into their office, explain the issue and its cause, and suggest a solution that helps you perform at your best. If they don’t take your advice, that’s on them.
- Run with purpose. Be the team that runs the furthest every weekend. Running is fundamental and straightforward – and it will lead to better results for us.
- Hunt with purpose. Nobody becomes a footballer to watch others play with the ball. If you want to play the game you and we love, you need the ball. Now, go and get it.
What we hope from you:
- Feel part of the West Ham family. Give your all to contribute to that family. Being paid to do so should be secondary to wanting to end your career with accomplishments and no regrets.
- Leave training clear on expectations. Every day, leave training knowing exactly what your manager expects on match day. If you’re unclear, find an interpreter and ask, preferably with your captain alongside you, so everyone is on the same page. No ambiguity, no excuses.
- Have faith in yourself. Back yourself, enjoy your football, and be the change you want to see in the team. Lead by example for the tens of thousands of kids who take inspiration from you, and the hundreds of thousands of adults who look to you for joy.
In return, what you can expect from us:
One thing: absolute and utter support.
You see, there’s no expectation from us to get results – it’s about the manner of performance. You have the privilege of being at this club to help deliver that. Trust me, the results will follow.
See you on Tuesday.
All the best,
Dan Hill (Mr Buddy Lurve)
