West Ham are nowhere near a deal to sign Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes, despite reports to the contrary.
Over the past couple of days, speculation that the Hammers are making headway in their efforts to sign Gomes has started to gain traction.
However, it is Claret & Hugh’s understanding that this is not the case, and very little has changed since we last updated you on the matter.
West Ham have delegated a third party to negotiate with Gomes’ representatives on the player’s behalf, and their first and only bid was rejected out of hand.
We were informed by a source outside of the club that West Ham were ‘a million miles away’ from agreeing a transfer with the former Manchester United midfielder.
Gomes is understood to be negotiating with several clubs but is nowhere near a decision. The Hammers’ offer is believed to be at the bottom of the pile and has been described as derisory and ‘nowhere near’ other bids in terms of wages and signing-on fees.
