There is something of a late night aspect to Chelsea’s deal for sporting winger Geovany Quenda.
The deal came from nowhere to be announced by Fabrizio Romano late in the night a just under a week ago.
Then, last night, Sporting CP released the details of the winger’s move, again in the wee hours. Maybe they’re just on a difference schedule over there?
In any case, with the sun now risen and the deal officially confirmed, Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC tracked down someone who had watched a lot of Quenda to find out what he would bring to Chelsea when he makes the move in a year’s time.
“He is a very creative player. He is a very young player and has a lot of potential to achieve,” Portuguese football journalist and pundit Mariana Fernandes told Kinsella.
“A right-winger with a left foot – so he has a left foot but also likes to go through opponents with his right foot, which becomes very confusing for defenders to try and stop him. He is really quick, really smart and, honestly, I don’t know how he is still only 17-years-old because he seems always so put together and mature in the way he transforms the game.”
Quenda already ahead of the curve in development, with plenty more to come

That is what we had imagined and what we had hoped for – explosive and two footed and keen on 1 on 1 duels. The fact that she also focuses on his impressive mental maturity too is very promising.
Sporting are so good at producing players, and another year working with their coaches and picking up regular game time will surely be hugely useful for Quenda. If he’s this good at 17, just imagine how good he could be in a year’s time when we actually get our hands on him.
