Manchester City will devote £50m of their summer transfer budget to signing AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, according to reports.
The Dutchman has been in excellent form this season, having scored 13 goals in all competitions and TEAMtalk claim that he is quickly becoming a top target for the next transfer window.
Reijnders does have other suitors. Reports in the Spanish media have linked Chelsea with a move for the player.
Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the 26-year-old, as head coach Ruben Amorim looks to improve his midfield options.
Why do City want to sign him?
Nico Gonzalez was snapped up from Porto in January but manager Pep Guardiola is said to be looking for another addition in the middle of the park.
Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic are expected to leave the Etihad, while there are also doubts over the future of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.
If they do all move on to pasture’s new, it would leave a gaping hole in the squad and Guardiola feels Reijnders would be a good signing. His former Barcelona teammate Ronald Koeman certainly rates him highly. Speaking back in September, the Netherlands boss described him as a “super complete midfielder”.
Milan are reluctant to sell Reinjders
It is important to point out that the midfielder has only just signed a contract extension with the Rossoneri, but the Serie A side may be forced into letting him go if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.
They are currently sitting 9th in the table, six points adrift of the top 4 with nine games left. City would stand a better chance of securing Reijnders’ signature if Milan end the season in poor form so it is a story to keep a close eye on.
