There are players who get time to get accustomed to new environments before thriving, but then there are stories that capture your attention, ones where a player comes out of the deep when everyone has lost belief in him, and he not only shows his capacity but shows a quality that changes the outcomes of the games, and Djed Spence’s story is that of the latter; it represents grit, determination, integrity, and everything that you need to look up to and feel inspired.
He had struggled to find his feet when he initially moved to N17 in a highly regarded move, but what followed was a series of loan transfers before Ange Postecoglou wanted him out the doors at Hotspur Way. And he had his one foot out the door, but that transfer did not conclude, and he was a surplus at N17.
But he put his head down and worked. Managed to impress Postecoglou and his staff. Managed to get a few substitute appearances. And then finally a few starts.
Now, recently, he managed to score his first Premier League goal in a 4-1 win over Ipswich, and that was followed by a strong performance against Manchester City. And this growing influence in big games is exactly why the North Londoners could reward his efforts with a new contract.
Wenham backs a new Djed Spence deal
His current deal at N17 runs until 2028, which already shows how much belief the chiefs at Tottenham had in him, but on the back of his current performances, John Wenham, owner of Lilywhite Rose, has suggested that another extension could be around the corner for the former Middlesbrough ace, potentially extending his stay until 2030 or 2031.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“He has got a contract with the club until 2028. Based on his current form, I wouldn’t be surprised if another contract extension is being lined up for the summer which would see Spence extend until 2030 or 2031.
“I just think he is reaching new heights now, and he is easily worth £30million-plus already, and that value will only continue to skyrocket. He is homegrown and he can play on both sides of the pitch.”
The Whys behind a new Spence contract…
Yes, he has been impressive, but is that enough to hand him a new contract? – He brings a lot to the Australian head coach’s roster, and we will start with the obvious—versatility. Spence can play in multiple positions and multiple roles (right-back, left-back, or wing-back), offering tactical flexibility when he has ended up being an invaluable asset in the arsenal for Postecoglou’s currently deployed system that aids in dynamic and multi-functional players to cover injuries or even to rotate the squad.
Then, another obvious but less considered condition is that Spence is a homegrown talent, which helps in meeting Premier League and European squad registration requirements, and the North Londoners retaining him will ensure that Levy doesn’t have to fork out heavily on domestic players.
Destiny Udogie and the full backs that have played at N17 of late have been frequently sidelined, and Spence is a reliable cover, and his availability this season has been critical. So his presence will end up ensuring that competition for places.
And then Spence is only twenty-four (24) with his peak years ahead, and tying him up to a new contract would ensure that Tottenham can end up getting the most out of him as he develops into an ideal Ange player.
