Originally broken by Gonzo in Claret and Hugh’s article a couple of weeks ago, it now appears that the story of West Ham being offered one up-and- coming Championship midfield ‘star of the future’ ( in deference to those of you that write and tell me you hate the terms ‘starlet’ or ‘wonderkid’) is gathering momentum.
The Sunderlandecho.com are the latest outlet today to suggest that the Hammers are planning to make a move for Rigg:
“Sunderland have reportedly set a £20million valuation for Rigg, but West Ham are looking to negotiate a deal closer to £10million. The report also claims Rigg was surprised by his omission from the England U19s squad, especially given the inclusion of Newcastle’s Lewis Miley and Fulham’s Joshua King. The Sun on Sunday suggests that securing a move to the Premier League sooner rather than later could be key to Rigg’s growth as a player.”
But not just ‘any old’ Premier League side. If you recall, from 12th March: “His family don’t want him going to a big club just to play in the reserves. He’s made 30 appearances this season and wants to continue his development. West Ham have been offered the player—it’s just up to them now.”
Young, talented but not prepared to languish in the reserves- Chris Rigg. Best not head off to Chelsea or Manchester City then!
Rigg is described as ‘disappointed’ not to have made the England u21 squad, the presence of Hammers’ Ollie Scarles in the England set up can demonstrate to youngsters like the Sunderland teenager that their career would be best served with a move down to East London. West Ham has suddenly become a desirable destination for top young talent looking to make the step up to Premier League success.
Chris Rigg’s progress towards a coveted Premier League career will depend hugely on Sunderland’s promotion push in the last quarter of the season and whether Graham Potter decides that West Ham’s midfield makeover needs Rigg as a component.
