Tottenham look to add another defender to the squad over the summer
Spurs’ domestic season? Absolutely miserable. No other way to put it. What started as an exciting, high-energy revolution under Ange Postecoglou has turned into a frustrating mess of injuries, suspensions, and bottling winnable games.
At one point, our backline was held together with duct tape and vibes, with “Mr. Always Nervy” Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray—who isn’t even a centre-back—being thrown into the deep end. If anything, this campaign has brutally exposed one thing: we need more defensive depth, as if we did not already know that. But here is a sense of positive news.
According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (page 71), Spurs are looking to sign Genk centre-back Matte Smets in the summer window.
With a reputation as the “next elite defender” and already capped for Belgium, he’s a name that could excite fans. We’ve seen how well Belgian centre-backs have done at Spurs—Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen were nothing short of world-class in their prime—so there’s a bit of hope that Smets could follow in their footsteps.
On paper, Spurs don’t look short at centre-back. Van de Ven, Romero, Dragusin, and even Ben Davies offer options, plus Archie Gray has shown he can step in when needed. But the reality is much grimmer. VDV and Cuti have both missed huge chunks of the last two seasons due to injuries and suspensions, which has left us scrambling for solutions far too often. This has cost us points, momentum and any chance of a serious top-four push.
Levy would like this kind of signing. Young, comparatively easy to fetch considering the market, plus loads of potential. But this is not the time for potential. We need proven players, and ready-made reinforcements before pre-season kicks in because this season has nothing left in it to hope for.

On another note, if Big Ange does not see himself backed this summer with the players he wants, he better have his resignation drafted before eventually seeing himself shown the way out by the CEO because of the club’s own mistakes by not backing a talented manager.
