Graham Potter is now paying dearly for Tim Steidten’s failed tenure as the director of football at West Ham United.
Tim Steidten was relieved of his duties at West Ham not long after Graham Potter was named as the new head coach in early January.
When Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui, Tim Steidten’s access to internal systems at West Ham was taken away, and rightly so.
The German oversaw some truly terrible deals during his time at the London Stadium.
Steidten failed to grasp the need for power and pace in the Premier League, and it proved to be his undoing in the end.
Now Potter has some serious work to do in order to clean up the mess left behind by the German.
Big West Ham revamp awaits under Graham Potter
The squad at the London Stadium right now is a badly unbalanced one.
The Hammers have the oldest squad in the Premier League as well, and that needs to change very quickly indeed.
The poor squad building at West Ham over the past few years has now well and truly come home to roost.
The Hammers head coach is said to be planning a big revamp of his West Ham squad this summer.
He is said to want to add more dynamism and youth to his ranks.
The problem for Potter is that funds are tight at the London Stadium right now.
And he needs to look no further than Tim Steidten for the reason as to why.
West Ham’s Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme deals holding Graham Potter back
Steidten led the charge to bring Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme to West Ham in the summer of 2024.

The duo cost around £50 million, and neither of them were needed.
At the time, West Ham needed a rapid young striker – that’s why the board were desperately trying to bring Jhon Duran to the London Stadium.
We ended up with Fullkrug in the end though and the rest is history. He was a terrible fit for West Ham and the Premier League from the start.
Meanwhile, the signing of Guilherme was just as unnecessary.
The Hammers were in desperate need of a midfield powerhouse, but Steidten signed the teenage winger instead. It really was a bizarre move.
And now with funds so tight at West Ham, Graham Potter is being made to pay for the mistakes made by Tim Steidten before his tenure at the London Stadium had even began.
