Tottenham handed major summer boost to sign Lille star Angel Gomes on a free transfer
It is now an open secret that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.
Angel Gomes joined Lille from Manchester United back in 2020, signing a five-year deal. The diminutive playmaker has made 134 appearances in all competitions for the French side, with his form leading to call-ups to the England squad under interim boss Lee Carsley last year. However, he is not a part of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and will leave Lille on a free transfer. He has attracted a lot of interest from clubs across Europe. At just 24, Angel Gomes is still far from reaching his peak, and his performances for both club and country over recent years have shown just how much potential he has.
Reliable GIVEMESPORT journalist Ben Jacobs has now provided the latest update on Spurs’ pursuit of the England international. He has handed Tottenham a boost in the race to sign Gomes by stating that no European football next season will not be a deal-breaker in his next destination.
“Tottenham are interested as well, and the player, by all accounts, isn’t going to make his decision solely based on who does or doesn’t have European football, which means that if Tottenham don’t get any European football next season, it may not put Gomes off, and I’m told that he’s relatively keen on returning to England as well, so that could give spurs an advantage,” Ben Jacobs exclusively told GIVEMESPORT.
Gomes has seen his 2024/25 season disrupted by injuries, limiting him to just 10 starts in Ligue 1 during the campaign. The midfielder has made 20 appearances in all competitions for Lille, scoring twice and providing one assist.
While he has not enjoyed a rollicking campaign, the Englishman could be exactly the midfield addition that Ange Postecoglou has been striving for since he became the head coach of Spurs. The ex-Man United academy talent brings that creativity, technical skill, and tactical astuteness, and then when one considers his ability to operate in multiple roles across the middle of the park, he may be the kind of profile that helps Ange’s Tottenham control games more than they have done.

Yves Bissouma has been reportedly placed on the chopping block, while James Maddison has seemingly fallen down the pecking order under Big Ange this season, which could force the England international to consider an exit too. This would leave the Lilywhites’ midfield department thin—an issue which Gomes could address.

Nonetheless, Tottenham must go all out to win the Europa League and clinch Champions League qualification for next season. That would not only put them in a driving seat for Gomes’ signature but also help attract exciting up-and-coming talents from different parts of the world.
