Tottenham Hotspur urged to offer Cristian Romero a new contract amid interest from Real Madrid
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles in the Premier League this season have largely been down to the injury crisis in defence, with Cristian Romero missing significant chunks of the campaign.
Since picking up a quadricep injury against Chelsea on 8 December, the Argentinean international was sidelined for 86 days, missing almost three months of action. During that period, he sat out 21 matches for Spurs and only recently returned to action. The centre-back has featured in the last four games before teaming up with his Argentina teammates earlier this month for international duty.
Following his return in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at home, Cristian Romero aimed a sly dig at the club’s medical department and staff over their handling of his injury, with the 26-year-old expressing gratitude instead to his national team’s physios for his recovery. This has only added to the uncertainty surrounding his future at White Hart Lane, with Real Madrid understood to be keen on his signature as they look to rebuild their defence.
Despite his concerns about his injuries, Tottenham wants to keep hold of Romero and offer him a new contract. Although they have issued an ultimatum that if he doesn’t agree on fresh terms by the time the transfer window reopens, the Cordoba-born star will be sold.
And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has suggested that Tottenham could offer Romero as much as £200,000-a-week contract to persuade him to extend his stay at N17.
“Spurs will need to offer Romero the kind of money Son Heung-min is on,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Therefore, I imagine that Tottenham will make an offer of around £200,000-a-week. Romero is a World Cup winner, and although he is a bit of a loose cannon at times, he is a world-class player and on his day he is as good as any centre-back in the country.
“The biggest problem with Romero is his consistency and injury record. However, if he is going to be offered a new contract, he is going to be very well-paid, let’s put it like that.”

Romero has barely had a good game in a Spurs shirt this season. It is true that he has had a disrupted season due to a hamstring and quad injury, but when fit, the South American star has not inspired confidence with his displays and made some errors. Yet, he remains the Lilywhites’ best defender, someone who falls into the world-class category.

Thus, it is easy to understand why the Hotspur Way chiefs want to tie him down to a new contract and secure his future. Or maybe, they want to extend Romero’s contract to get into a strong position from where they can charge a sizeable fee if Real Madrid come calling for his signature.
The 2022 World Cup winner has a contract at the Hotspur Way until 2027, so instead of convincing the player to extend his stay, our club bosses will be wise to sell him and reinvest the money into a player who is not injury-prone and reliable.
