Dejan Kulusevski could depart Tottenham Hotspur if they fail to qualify for Europe
Tottenham Hotspur barely have anything left to play in the Premier League, so it would be wise for Ange Postecoglou to focus on winning the Europa League.
The North Londoners defeated AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate in the Europa League round of 16 earlier this month. Now through to the competition’s quarter-finals where they will face German side Eintracht Frankfurt in April, it is Spurs’ only chance to lift a trophy but also their sole route to clinching Champions League qualification next season.
Failure to do so would not only have ramifications on the future of Ange Postecoglou but may also lead to concerns over the futures of several first-team stars.
According to a report from Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Dejan Kulusevski could leave Tottenham if they fail to secure European football for next season. He could return to Serie A, where several top clubs are vying for his signature.
Dejan Kulusevski has undoubtedly been Spurs’ best player this season, producing consistent performances amid the chaos. Ange’s decision to change his position from the right wing to a central attacking midfielder has proven transformative, helping the player become productive in the final third.
The Sweden international, who is currently injured, has enjoyed his best season in a Spurs shirt to date with 10 goals and as many assists in 42 games across all competitions. However, if Ange’s side misses out on a place in Europe, Kulusevski could end his time at N17.
The aforementioned report adds the Stockholm-born talent could join either AC Milan or Napoli this summer unless the Australian tactician wins the Europa League, with Fabio Paratici—the man who brought the 24-year-old to Spurs from Juventus, a contender to become Director of Football at Milan. Should Spurs fail to win the European competition, Kulusevski will be allowed to leave for €50m.

It will be extremely difficult for Daniel Levy and Co. to cling onto Kulusevski if the Lilywhites don’t qualify for Europe next season. Certainly, Spurs would want a lot more than €50m for the Swedish attacker if they miss out on their season’s objective. However, it would not be surprising if the 24-year-old and his entourage pushed for a move away from White Hart Lane due to the lack of ambition and progress of the club.

For a player of Kulusevski’s class, quality and experience, he deserves to play in Europe. Also, no European football next season would be a blow for Tottenham, especially in terms of finances and ability to attract top talents. It would also be difficult to keep hold of some of the top talents Ange has at his disposal, and Kulusevski certainly is one of those.
