The news that none of us wanted to read was finally made public today when it was confirmed that Crysencio Summerville’s season is over. The hamstring injury that he sustained in January was subsequently aggravated and now appears to be in need of surgery- which the player has decided to forego, hoping for a non-surgical fix.
Incredibly disappointing news for Summerville, for the fans and for Graham Potter who showed us a glimpse of his ‘brave new world’ for just 45 minutes in that fateful FA Cup tie during which first Fullkrug an then Summerville were injured: Neither have been seen since.
There must have been doubts for some time that Summerville’s recovery would be straightforward. The apparent u-turn over the possible sale of Luis Guilherme now in February whilst the Brazilian window was still open now makes perfect sense: The youngster is the only fast attacking player in the squad who could attempt to cover Summerville’s role and so the decision to keep Guilherme at the club as a precaution whilst Summerville was injured was prudent- if you like an ‘insurance’ policy in case Summerville’s recovery didn’t proceed to plan.
What isn’t so clear is why the Brazilian hasn’t had any game time in Summerville’s absence.
With the club safe from relegation and Summerville out for the next ten games, surely Luis Guilherme will have an opportunity to step up with a run in the side. Unless Potter has made the decision to sell him – in which case why keep him in the winter? Very puzzling treatment of a young, talented forward who, along with Evan Ferguson, must be sick of parking his backside on the bench week after week.
